With some paint and new drawer pulls, this kitchen is completely transformed.
For the cost of a gallon of primer, and two gallons of paint, I feel like I have a brand new kitchen! The only thing I hate about it? How long we waited to do it.
It can be hard to paint something that is perfectly fine. And it can be hard to paint something that is so permanent—it's not like painting a portable piece of furniture that you can just move to another room or easily repaint if you're not happy with it. Or—gulp—afford to just replace if you mess it all up!
But I always wanted white cabinets. I didn't hate my old cabinets at all, not even close, and maybe that's why it took me over a year to finally commit after hubs said he wanted to paint them. They were safe; they were fine.
Even when I did make up my mind, I painted four different samples on the cabinets. I wanted white, but not clinical white and not cream. Finally, I landed on Downy by Sherwin-Williams. After a coat of oil based primer, it covered beautifully. Three months of a family of five clanging and banging around here, and it has held up beautifully as well.
Now instead of "fine" cabinets, I have cabinets I love.
I love having people over and watching them walk in, look around puzzled and ask, "Wait. What's new in here?" And then it hits them—the old orange-hued cabinets are now white. Without exception, everyone agrees it makes the room so much brighter. If my cabinets could talk, I think they'd say, "I feel ten pounds lighter!" (But thank God they can't. Because no one needs to know about my hidden stash of chocolate!)
For me, living in New England with our winters that go on and on (and on and on), having a sparkling kitchen is a must. Bright rooms and lots of color make me happy. A funny thing happened after the cabinets were painted white—all the colorful accessories I already had popped so much more against the white canvas.
So if you're contemplating painting your cabinets and you're hesitating, ask yourself if you want to hug them. Spend more time with them? Or do you want to run from them? As best I can tell, it's like picking a spouse (on a much shallower, not-as-important level). When you know you're ready, you're ready! Good luck!
